What's My Skin Type?

Taking care of your skin can be difficult especially when you're not sure what your skin type is and what products to use. There are so many products that say they're the best, dermatologist approved, and all that good stuff, but that doesn't mean they're the best for YOU. So let's break it down a little bit and help determine what your skin type is and what might be best for you.

5 Basic Skin Types

There are five basic types of healthy skin: normal, dry, oily, combination (both dry and oily), and sensitive. Your skin type is characterized by several factors, like sebaceous secretion, hydration, and sensitivity level. A large determining factor of these characteristics is genetics, but weather and time can also have an affect on your skin type. Knowing which skin type you have can help guide your skin care goals and personal habits to improve your complexion and elasticity. All skin types require general cleansing and moisture to remain healthy, but there are targeting things you can do to improve your skin based on its type.

Normal Skin Type

Normal skin tends to be balanced, not too oily or dry. Pores are generally small, and breakouts can happen but aren't frequent. Skin texture is smooth, and this type has a radiant complexion.

Dry Skin Type

Pores are almost invisible in this skin type. There might be red patches of irritation and a dull, rough complexion. When this skin type gets too dry, it can become scaly and feel more tight.

Oily Skin Type

Oily skin might have larger pores and more blackheads and blemishes. This can be worsened by stress, puberty, or heat/humidity. This skin type has a dull complexion and appears shiny.

Combination Skin Type

Combination skin includes both dry and oily characteristics in different parts of the face. The T-Zone tends to be more oily while the cheeks remain dry or normal. Pores can look larger than normal, and this skin type might experience blackheads and shiny skin.

Sensitive Skin Type

Sensitive skin can be a combination of any of the other skin types. You could have sensitive oily skin sensitive normal skin. If you have a sensitive skin type, you might experience burning, itching, or dryness. It might be triggered by a certain irritant.

No matter your skin type, there are things you can do to make sure your skin remains healthy and strong. One thing is to get facials regularly. We have facials for all skin types. All you need to do is tell us your skin type or what's going on with your skin, and we'll pick a facial handmade for you. Microneedling is also great to help stimulate collagen, reduce scars, and improve skin elasticity. Be mindful of the products you're using as well. If you have an oily skin type and you're using moisture heavy products, that will end up exacerbating the issue. We have some amazing quality skincare products at Glow Balance, and we'd be happy to help you pick the right one! We currently carry Skinceuticals and ZO Skin Health.
